Local Connections Highlight GLSCL All-Star Game

The Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League’s best come to town tonight for the league all-star game at Western Hills High School. Playing host for the rest of the league will be the first place Cincinnati Steam, who, at 21-6, will be represented by seven players. Along with the league-high number of all-stars, manager Todd Benzinger, former Cincinnati Red and current Lakota East girls’ basketball coach, will manage the All-Star Red Team.

Of the Steam’s seven all-stars, six have immediate local ties. They include infielder Brad Gschwind (Lakota West), catcher Billy O’Conner (Elder), first baseman Tommy Nurre (St. Xavier), first baseman Brandon Besl (Oak Hills), and pitcher Brian Sand (Oak Hills), and outfielder Zach Hurley (Springboro HS). The lone Steam all-star away from the local area is pitcher Ryan Kruszka (Butler), from Ellwood, Illinois.

Other local GLSCL all-stars are University of Cincinnati pitcher Jake Geglein (Delaware Cows) and Xavier University’s Joe Kohler (Lake Erie Monarchs), also a pitcher, as well as Kings High School graduate Bryan Bonner (Lima Locos), an infielder.

To catch a glimpse at the wealth of local talent on display, come to Western Hills this evening for the GLSCL All-Star Game. The first pitch will be at 6:35 PM, with numerous promotions throughout the game from the likes of CheapTickets.com, Tide, and Jack of All Games. The game will also be webcast by ICRC Sports, which can be viewed through ATW Sportscast by going to cincinnatisteam.com and clicking on the “Live Audio” link on the left side of the page.
