Five former and
current Steam players taken in 2009 MLB draft
The Cincinnati Steam
proudly announces that five players with ties to the team were taken in
the 2009 MLB Amateur draft.
Danny Rosenbaum was
the first, selected in the 22nd round by the Washington
Nationals with the 652nd overall pick. Rosenbaum, from
Loveland High School, is a left-handed pitcher out of Xavier University,
where he posted a 5-5 record in 16 appearances, totaling over 88 innings
and 77 strikeouts. Rosenbaum was a member of the 2007 Cincinnati Steam,
when he made nine appearances and three starts with a 5.05 ERA.
Joey O’Gara was the
next player taken with the 938th pick by the Florida Marlins
in the 31st round. O’Gara, out of Sycamore High School, is a
right-handed pitcher from Indiana University, where he threw over 46
innings, working his way to a 3-3 record and a 5.83 ERA. For the Steam,
O’Gara went 5-0 with a 2.39 ERA in seven starts.
After that was St.
Xavier High School’s Tommy Nurre, a right-handed first baseman from
Miami University. He was taken with the 1,139th overall pick
by the Cincinnati Reds. Nurre led the Redhawks with a .406 batting
average, 17 home runs and 54 RBI in 2009. With the Steam, he batted .299
with five home runs in his 37 starts.
Robert Sabo, out of
Middletown High School, was the next taken with the 1,145th
overall pick by the Cleveland Indians. Sabo is a right-handed pitcher
from Kent State, where he struck out 24 batters in just over 26 innings
of work for the Golden Flashes. With the Steam in 2007, Sabo made two
appearances, totaling three innings and giving up only two hits for no
earned runs.
Zach Hurley was the
final Steam player selected, taken by the Florida Marlins with the 1,358th
overall pick. Hurley, from Springboro High School, is a left-handed
outfielder from Ohio State University. Hurley batted .349 for the
Buckeyes in 2009, as well as knocking in 53 RBI in his 59 starts. For
the Steam in 2008, Hurley hit a league-leading .433 en route to being
crowned the GLSCL Player of the Year and Top Position Prospect.
