Pitching shuts down Monarchs

—  The Steam win the first of two games against the Lake Erie Monarchs this afternoon behind strong pitching.  Charlie Leesman (Xavier University) started the game for Cincinnati and went 5 strong innings striking out 8 and giving up only 1 hit.  His performance was followed by 2 innings of scoreless baseball provided by Kurt Smith (Ohio University).

                Jason Cisper (Miami University Oh) scored the only run of the game after reaching on an error in the third inning.  Tommy Nurre (Miami University Oh) and Ryan Strausborger (Indiana State University) paced the Steam hitting each having two hits on the game.

—  After taking the first game 1-0 against Lake Erie, Cincinnati continues their winning ways scoring six runs in route to beating the Monarchs 6-3.

The Steam were led by Zach Hurley (The Ohio State University) who recorded two hits and one RBI, while having two terrific plays in centerfield.  Brandon Besl (Ohio University) and Rick Betsch (Butler University) also played outstanding games, both having 2 RBI’s on the day and great plays in the field.  Pat Berndsen (Thomas More College) picked up the win for the Steam, his record going to 2-0 on the year. 

Cincinnati improves their record as a team to 6-2 after the sweep of the Lake Erie Monarchs today.  This puts them into the hunt for first place in the Great Lake Summer Collegiate League.  Their next game takes place Sunday, June 17, at 2:05 p.m. at Western Hills High School against the Grand Lake Mariners.  The Steam would love for everyone to come out and enjoy Father’s Day with them and many other fans.  Prizes and other items will be given away all afternoon long.
