Xenia, OH – The Cincinnati Steam slammed their way to their first victory of the 2008 Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League season with a 6-2 victory over Xenia Athletes in Action. The Steam stormed out of the gate in the top of the first inning after a walk and back to back singles with two outs, shortstop Ryan Strausborger (Indiana State) hit the Steam’s first ever grand slam home run to put Cincinnati up 4-0. The Steam sent eleven batters to the plate in the top of the first, with Nate Fields(Anderson HS/Ball State University) driving in the inning’s fifth run to give them a 5-0 lead. The Steam never looked back behind starter Matt Winterhalter (LaSalle HS/Northern Kentucky University) three innings, Joey O’Gara (Sycamore HS/Indiana University) and five innings of lights out relief by Brian Sand (Oak Hills HS/University of Cincinnati), striking out 7 of the 17 batters he faced.

Offensively for the Steam, Nate Fields had three hits, Tommy Nurre (St. Xavier HS/Miami University) had three hits and an rbi, Brad Gschwind (Lakota West HS/Miami University) and Billy O’Conner (Elder HS/Xavier University) had three hits along with his defensive prowess behind the plate catching two more runners on the basepaths, bringing his season total to four thwarted baserunners.

Next up for the Steam is their home opener Tuesday night, against the Anderson Servants at Western Hills High School at 7:05pm.
