Solid Pitching, Besl Homer Starts New Streak for Steam

(Cincinnati, OH) – The Steam began a new winning streak behind solid starting pitching, stellar defense and good hitting as they defeat the Lima Locos 7-0 Friday night.

David Middendorf gave the Steam a strong outing on the hill going five strong innings allowing no runs on two hits and one walk as well as striking out six Locos. Chad Jenkins of Lima did not generate the same quality start for the Locos, giving up four earned runs  on seven hits in five innings.

The Steam struck first in the bottom of the second inning after a Billy O’Conner walk, Brandon Besl stepped up and knocked one over the left field fence giving the Steam all the cushion they would need.

The score remained the same until the bottom of the fifth with Brad Gschwind aboard, Tommy Nurre tripled off the right-center field wall, knocking in Gschwind and allowing Nurre to be brought in on a Zach Hurley sac fly making the score 4-0.

The Steam added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded Billy O’Conner brought in Gschwind on a groundball to third, advancing runners to second and third with one out. A Zach Elmer wild pitch allowed Adam Eaton to score as a result of heads up base-running and Zach Hurley scored on a Brandon Besl single, ending the scoring barrage at 7.

The Steam move to 9-3 and will travel to Athens, OH on Sunday for a doubleheader against the Southern Ohio Copperheads. The Steam will return home next Wednesday, July 2 for a doubleheader against the Great Lake Mariners beginning at 4:35.
