Cincinnati Steam loses close one in Opener

The Cincinnati Steam lost yesterday 2-1 in the season opener against Licking County. Both teams combined for eight hits through nine innings with Arnett getting the win and Riley with the save. Neither team was able to start a rally in any of the innings. Rosado belted a home-run over the left field wall in the second inning to put the Settlers up 1-0. Leesman went four innings striking out four.

The next rally came in the top of the ninth when Stewart balked allowing an unearned run to cross the plate. Nurre answered with a lead-off single in the bottom of the inning and advanced to second on a ground-out to first. Strausberger followed by reaching first on an error scoring Nurre. The Steam left one stranded to end the game.

The game started with an emotional charge as the Schuermann family was honored with the retired jersey and Jack’s signed contract with the steam. Jack Schuermann was a third grade student at St. Jude who contracted cancer last season. The Steam signed him as their first player when learning of his love for baseball.

The Steam’s next home game is scheduled for Sunday, June 10th at Western Hills High School. Game time is 2:05.
