Sweep Moves Team to 13-4
Cincinnati,
Oh. - The Cincinnati Steam scored three runs
in the bottom of the second inning and held off a late inning surge from
the Grand Lake Mariners to win 3-2 in the first game of Wednesday’s
double header.
Charlie Leesman made his first appearance on the hill for the Steam
going 2.1 innings, giving up one
hit and three walks, but allowing no runs to move to 1-0 on the year.
Dave Paddock of the Mariners
went 5.1 innings in a losing effort giving up ten hits, and three earned
runs moving him to 1-2 on the
year.
The Steam scored their three runs in the bottom of the second with two
outs. With Billy O’Conner
aboard after a double to left field, Steve Brown advanced O’Conner to
third. Adam Eaton singled to left
plating O’Conner, advancing Brown to third and Eaton moved to second as
a result of heads up base
running making it 1-0. Ryan Strausborger dribbled a ball down the third
base line that scored Brown
making the score 2-0. Brad Gschwind nubbed a grounder down the first
base line that stayed fair and
scored Eaton making it 3-0.
The Mariners didn’t strike until the bottom of the sixth inning. After

Staloway, Ryan Schlater singled to left scoring Staloway and cutting the
Steam lead to 3-1. Again in the
bottom of the seventh the Mariners were able to get on the board. Brian
Suerdick doubled to right-

Steam Take Game 2 of DH in Dramatic Fashion
The Cincinnati Steam won Game 2 of the doubleheader in dramatic fashion
after giving up three runs in
the top of the seventh inning forcing extras. Damage control and solid
hitting allowed the Steam to get
out of numerous jams and find a way to win.
After a lead-off double from Nate Fields to open the game, Zach Hurley
poked a double of his own off
the chain-link monster in right field, plating Fields and giving the
Steam a 1-0 lead.
The Steam scored again in the bottom of the second inning with Ryan
Bellamy reaching on a throwing
error by third basemen Mike Stalowy. Jon Edgington then hit a bleeder
down the first baseline. With
Bellamy trying to advance to 3rd, Grand Lake second basemen Brian
Robinson made a throwing error in
attempt to throw out Bellamy that got passed the third basemen allowing
Bellamy to come home on the
passed ball making the score 2-0.
After singles in the bottom of the fourth by Adam Eaton and Jon
Edgington and a double steal, Brad
Gschwind plated Eaton with a sacrifice fly to right field making the
score 3-0 in the favor of the Steam,
The Mariners finally got on the board in the top of the seventh inning
with Trevor Willis aboard via a
Michael Korfhagen walk,. Nick Urban then stepped up and hit a deep shot
over the left field fence to cut
the lead to 3-2. Mike Staloway and Joe Mack hit back-to-back singles
with the go-ahead run on first
base. With two outs Brett Burch hit a bouncer down the first base line
that first basemen Tommy Nurre
could not handle, allowing Staloway to come all the way home tying the
score at 3-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jake Brown reached on a single to right,
then Steve Brown was hit by a
pitch putting the winning run in scoring position. Billy O’Conner came
in to pinch run for Jake Brown
and Ryan Bellamy popped one over second basemen Brian Robinson, but a
great throw from right
fielder Kory Benbow gunned O’Conner at the plate sending the game to
extra innings.
The Steam were able to get out of harm’s way in the top of the eighth
inning as the Mariners strand
runners on second and third. In the Steam’s half of the inning, Eaton
walked to lead off the inning and
moved over to 2nd on a Jon Edgington sacrifice bunt. Eaton then got to
third as Nate Fields reached on
a fielding error by shortstop Trevor Willis. With one out, Brad Gschwind
ended a long, hard-fought at
bat with a ground ball back to the pitcher who nonchalantly looked back
Eaton and proceeded to throw
out Gschwind at first. However, aggressive, smart base running brought
Adam Eaton home
when Mariners pitcher Heath Riley threw a lazy assist to get Gschwind at
first allowing Eaton to plate
the winning run, 4-3. Joel Ernst gets the win and Heath Riley will be
credited with the loss.
The Steam’s sweep of Wednesday’s doubleheader moved them to 13-4 on the
summer and dropped
the Grand Lake Mariners to 5-8.
The Steam remain in the lead of the GLSCL ahead of Southern Ohio and
will be back in action Thursday
night against the Anderson Servants at 7:05 for Kids Hot Dog Night where
the first 50 kids in the
stadium receive a ticket for a free hot dog and soft drink.
