Doubleheader Sweep Keeps Steam Perfect at
Home
The Cincinnati Steam
took the first game of the double header against the Southern Ohio
Copperheads 10-3. Brandon Besl hit the second ever grand slam in Steam
history to give Cincinnati the cushion they needed to take the first
game.
The Copperheads got on
the board in the second inning. Kevan Hess led off with a single and
advanced to second on a Brian Sand wild pitch. Sand then hit Chad Geier,
threw another wild pitch and walked Chris Jarrett to load the bases.
Tyler Oliver hit a two-run single to left field to take an early lead.
The Steam bats came
alive in the bottom half of the fourth inning with a lead off triple
down the first base line from Jon Edgington. After a Steve Brown walk,
Zach Hurley singled in Edgington cutting the lead to 1. Tommy Nurre then
singled to right to load the bases for Brandon Besl. A sac fly to right
field plated Brown from third to tie the score. Billy O’Conner came up
with runners at first and second and proceeded to single to right,
bringing in Hurley from second to take the lead 3-2.
The Copperheads were
able to capitalize on Steam mistakes in the top fifth. Chad Geier walked
and was able to advance to second on a Jake Brown error allowing Jared
Humphreys to get aboard. The Steam erased two base runners in a 3-6-3
double play, but Geier moved to third. Tyler Oliver singled in Geier to
tie up the game at 3 a piece.
The Steam put the game
out of reach in the bottom of the fifth batting around the order and
putting six runs on the board. Brad Gschwind and Tommy Nurre reached on
errors and Jon Edgington via a fielders choice to load the bases for
Brandon Besl. Besl hit a no-doubter over the left field fence for the
second grand slam in Cincinnati Steam history. Billy O’Conner kept the
heat on with a single up the middle. O’Conner was knocked in by a Ryan
Strausborger double to left field. Jake Brown hit a double of his own to
left field to score Strausborger and take the lead to 9-3.
The Steam added one
more run in the bottom of the sixth for insurance. Jon Edgington led off
getting hit and stealing second. Tommy Nurre came up and knocked a
double down the third baseline scoring Edgington and ending the scoring
at 10-3.

O’Conner tying the score at 1. Nate Fields drew a walk and Steve Brown
