Doubleheader Sweep Keeps Steam Perfect at Home

The Cincinnati Steam took the first game of the double header against the Southern Ohio Copperheads 10-3. Brandon Besl hit the second ever grand slam in Steam history to give Cincinnati the cushion they needed to take the first game. 

The Copperheads got on the board in the second inning. Kevan Hess led off with a single and advanced to second on a Brian Sand wild pitch. Sand then hit Chad Geier, threw another wild pitch and walked Chris Jarrett to load the bases. Tyler Oliver hit a two-run single to left field to take an early lead. 

The Steam bats came alive in the bottom half of the fourth inning with a lead off triple down the first base line from Jon Edgington. After a Steve Brown walk, Zach Hurley singled in Edgington cutting the lead to 1. Tommy Nurre then singled to right to load the bases for Brandon Besl. A sac fly to right field plated Brown from third to tie the score. Billy O’Conner came up with runners at first and second and proceeded to single to right, bringing in Hurley from second to take the lead 3-2. 

The Copperheads were able to capitalize on Steam mistakes in the top fifth. Chad Geier walked and was able to advance to second on a Jake Brown error allowing Jared Humphreys to get aboard. The Steam erased two base runners in a 3-6-3 double play, but Geier moved to third. Tyler Oliver singled in Geier to tie up the game at 3 a piece. 

The Steam put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth batting around the order and putting six runs on the board. Brad Gschwind and Tommy Nurre reached on errors and Jon Edgington via a fielders choice to load the bases for Brandon Besl. Besl hit a no-doubter over the left field fence for the second grand slam in Cincinnati Steam history. Billy O’Conner kept the heat on with a single up the middle. O’Conner was knocked in by a Ryan Strausborger double to left field. Jake Brown hit a double of his own to left field to score Strausborger and take the lead to 9-3.

The Steam added one more run in the bottom of the sixth for insurance. Jon Edgington led off getting hit and stealing second. Tommy Nurre came up and knocked a double down the third baseline scoring Edgington and ending the scoring at 10-3.

The Cincinnati Steam took both games of the doubleheader from the Southern Ohio Copperheads, winning Game 2 8-1. A big seven run fifth inning took care of the Copperheads, burying them as Cincinnati batted around the order in the inning. 

The Copperheads jumped on the Steam early in game two. Joel Ernst walked Chad Geier and hit Jake Goebbert to give Southern Ohio early baserunners. Tyler Oliver hit into a fielders choice that put runners on the corners with two outs. Phillip Vaughn hit a double down the third baseline to plate Geier from third to take an early lead, 1-0. 

The Steam rallied in the bottom of the fifth and took a commanding 7-1 lead after batting around the order for the second time in two games. The inning was started after Billy O’Conner reached on a throwing error by third baseman Taylor Hoisington. A Ryan Strausborger double brought in O’Conner tying the score at 1. Nate Fields drew a walk and Steve Brown reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases for Zach Hurley. Hurley hit a tailing fly ball to left center that cleared the bases and gave the Steam their first lead of the night, 4-1. Tommy Nurre plated Hurley on a single up the middle making it 5-1 Steam. Brandon Besl drew a walk and Billy O’Conner reached base for the second time in the inning, this time on a double to left-center which brought in Nurre from first and advanced Besl to third. Ryan Strausborger bounced one back up the middle that scored Besl from third, ended the scoring at 7-1 after five innings. 

Cincinnati added some insurance in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brad Gschwind reached on an infield hit and Nate Fields singled to left making it first and second. Steve Brown hit a shot down the first baseline scoring Gschwind and ending the Steam scoring at 8-1 and sweeping the double header. 

The Steam will head to Xenia tomorrow to face the Athletes in Action at 7:00. The Steam then have the week off, but will host the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League All-Star game on Wednesday, Ju;ly 16 at 6:35. Seven Steam players will be featured in the game and numerous giveaways and prizes will be handed out.
