Early Lead, Season Sweep over All Americans

(Cincinnati, OH) The Cincinnati Steam held off a ninth inning rally to defeat the Columbus All Americans 6-5 and complete a season series sweep (4-0).  With the victory the Steam raise their league leading record to 25-7 and inch ever closer to clinching the GLSCL regular season title and a first place seeding for the post season tournament that will begin Tuesday, August 5th at Xenia.

Cincinnati took an early 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning on a two run triple off the bat of Zach Hurley.  Hurley’s triple scored Jon Edgington, who had been hit by a pitch, and Brad Gschwind, who hit a bleeder in between the All American first baseman, second baseman and right fielder.  Columbus cut that lead in half by scoring a run in the top of the 2nd off of Steam starter Bryan Earley.  Cincinnati added two in the fourth, one in the fifth and another in the sixth.  Earley went the first four innings for his first victory of the season in his first start.  Earley scattered four hits, struck out four and walked two.  Reliever Eric Braeckel pitched a near perfect four innings giving up two hits and striking out six.

In the top of the ninth inning, Jorge Marban made his first Steam appearance and while striking out two, he walked one and gave up two hits before Zack Leonard hit a grand slam to cut the deficit to one.  Steven Davis was summoned from the bull pen to shut down the rally.  Davis gave up a hit before recording the final out by inducing a fly ball that Nate Fields corralled giving Davis his second save of the season.
