Delaware wins in Bottom of

Steam Comeback
Falls Short -- Steam Face Copperheads tomorrow at Noon
Columbus, Oh —
The Delaware Cows beat the Cincinnati Steam 6-5 in
dramatic fashion in the opening round of the Great Lakes
Summer Collegiate League playoffs at Bill Davis Stadium
in Columbus, Oh.
The
Cows won in the bottom of the ninth behind a strong
performance by starter Jay Jackson (Furman) who pitched
six innings of one run baseball striking out nine Steam
hitters. Reece Asbury (Miami Univ.) struggled early for
Cincinnati but eventually settled down finishing with
seven strikeouts. Picking up the win for Delaware was
Greg Houston (Miss State Univ.) who got the last out of
the top of the ninth.
Delaware scored first in the bottom of the first inning
with Michael Guerrero (Meridian CC) lining a base hit
into left field, and with the next batter Matt Smith
(Univ. of Cincinnati) being hit in the head with a
pitch. The bases became loaded when Asbury walked
Cameron Satterwhite (Univ. of Cincinnati). Ryan Mottern
(Oklahoma Univ.) was also hit in the head plating the
first run for the Cows. Brian Delucia (Ohio State
Univ.) grounded into a fielder’s choice scoring another
run, and Russ Sneed (Miss. State Univ.) hit a base hit
up the middle for an RBI to wrap up the scoring in the
bottom of the first; Delaware led Cincinnati 3-0.
In the
top of the sixth inning Billy O’Conner (Indiana Univ.)
led off with a bunt base hit; the following batter Nate
Fields (Ball State Univ.) grounded to second and reached
on a fielder’s choice and an error by Cory Kovanda (Ohio
State Univ.) moved O’Conner to third. With runners at
first and the third the Steam score their first run
after Fields is picked off at first and stays in the run
down long enough to allow O’Conner to score.
The
game progressed at 3-1 until the top of the ninth when
Zach Hurley (Ohio State Univ.) reached on an error, and
the next batter Tommy Nurre (Miami Univ.) doubled to the
gap in right centerfield scoring Hurley. Nurre was
injured coming into second base and had to leave the
game. Ryan Strausborger (Indiana State) came in to run
for Nurre and scored the tying run on an error by the
shortstop Delucia, scoring all the way from second.
After Steve Brown (Xavier Univ.) walks, and O’Conner
gets hit by a pitch loading up the bases, Nate Fields
singles scoring two runs for the Steam.
Leading off the bottom of the ninth Michael Hubbard
(Univ. of Arkansas-Ft. Smith) hit a solo homerun to
right field off Steam closer Chase Stewart (Miami
Univ.) Stewart goes on to hit Nick Karow (Furman) who
gets pinch ran for by Jamel Scott (Univ. of
Cincinnati). Michael Guerrero went on to double off the
left field wall scoring Scott and tying the game up
5-5. The Steam elect to intentionally walk Matt Smith
(Univ. of Miss) and walk pinch hitter Steve Ruygrok
(Ohio Wesleyan) to load the bases. With Ryan Mottern up
to bat, Stewart walks him on a 3-1 pitch to score the
winning run for the Delaware Cows.
